Internet Problem Plagues The Reluctant Forester

Everything was going smoothly enough.

I was enjoying writing about my experiences, and I was managing the website effectively, I thought.

Then there was a big problem.

I was notified by my IP Provider (the big computer in the sky that manages all the electrons) that for security reasons, I needed to add some “plugins” that would protect the website against hackers. They recommended the “WordPress All-in-One Security and Firewall.”

I dutifully implemented all the security changes, without giving too much thought to which of them would be useful and which would prove to be problematic. Unfortunately, through a combination of missteps on my part, I ended up locking myself out of the website. I could no longer login to add posts.

The website was frozen in time.

After months of trying to fix this problem (off and on, not continuously), I decided it was easier (by a lot) to just re-create The Reluctant Forester site at a new address. This time, I was determined to not lock myself out.

Since I was recreating the website, this allowed me an opportunity to make a few changes. One thing I did differently, was to use a different WordPress Theme, “Twenty Fourteen.” This not only provided a little different look, but was “responsive”, meaning that it was optimized for viewing, regardless of whether the viewer was using a desktop computer, an IPad, or an iPhone. A little over half my viewers use a mobile device, mainly IPads or IPhones for looking at the website.

Another change I made was to add some advertising to the website. This helps support the site, but I hope it’s not too distracting.

Finally, I have to tell you that this is actually the third version of “The Reluctant Forester.” The first version has gone unmentioned because I misspelled “Forester.” (I somehow thought there were two R’s in Forester.) You’d think that would be something that was pretty easy to change, but you’d be wrong about that. I had to abandon the website and start over, this time spelling Forester correctly.
