Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology

The Health Care of Women in Military Settings

January 1, 2000

To the Men and Women of Military Medicine:

The mission of Navy Medicine is to support the combat readiness of the Navy and Marine Corps, and the other uniformed services. We promote, protect and maintain the health of all those entrusted to our care, anytime, anywhere.

Fundamental to this support is the health care of women of the armed forces.

I am very pleased to introduce the 2nd Edition of Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology.  This series of manuals and training tools has evolved over the last 10 years, with contributions from many of the most knowledgeable, experienced clinicians and teachers in the field, from all the uniformed services.

The focus of Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology is the health care of women in deployed settings, at sea, in the field, and in the air. Those providing health care in those settings will find Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology most useful. But I encourage everyone involved in the health care of women to read and use this material. All of us will, at one time or another, act in deployed settings or provide care to those who do. This manual is essential, I believe,  to our understanding of the health care needs of women in military settings.
