Army Service Number

All Army personnel in World War II were assigned a unique Army Service Number, or A.S.N.  These Service  Numbers were not completely random, but utilized an identification system.

Tom Cartmell’s A.S.N. was 16136631.

The first digit (1) indicated that Tom had volunteered for the Army. The second digit (6) showed that he had joined the Army from the state of Illinois, Michigan or Wisconsin.
