Tom Cartmell’s Aunt Mollie was his father’s sister. Born in 1883, she was married in 1902. She and her husband, Gerald H. Smith lived for a number of years in Colorado before moving to South Pasadena, California, just northeast of Los Angeles. In 1930, they lived at of 905 Diamond Avenue. By 1940, they had moved to Meridian Avenue and owned a Cafe.

Gerald worked as a cook and Mollie worked as a waitress. Gerald died in 1945, a few days after Tom was killed in Germany.

Mollie lived to be 93.
