Following Tom’s last saved letter to Zoe in March, 1941, there are no more written communications for 5 months. During this time, Tom graduates from high school, has his summer break, and travels to New York.
In September, 1941, Tom begins his college education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (just north of Chicago). He joins a fraternity (Sigma Nu) and his first letter to Zoe from Northwestern is as a fraternity pledge.
