Tom attended the Northwestern University Institute of Aeronautical Sciences during this time, studying Civil Air Regulations, Navigation, Meteorology and the General Service of Aircraft.

He had enrolled in the Civilian Pilot Training Program and was participating in that as well as continuing other studies, notably Chemistry.
