Tolnaftate Powder (Tinactin)

Category:

  • Antifungal

Description:

  • Antifungal

Indications:

  • Tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis

  • Tinea versicolor (Malassezia furfur)

  • Onychomycosis

  • Athlete’s foot prophylaxis (powder formulations)

Contraindications:

  • Not for ophthalmic use

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • If no improvement occurs in 4 weeks, reevaluate patient.

  • For external use only, avoid eyes.

  • Cleanse and dry area before application.

  • Wash hands after application.

  • For athlete’s foot, wear well-fitting, ventilated shoes.  Change shoes and socks at least once a day.

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Relatively non-toxic

  • If local irritation or sensitization occurs, discontinue use.

 

 

Dosage:

  • Administered as a cream, solution, gel, powder or spray liquid and powder

    • ointment, cream, solution and gel are vehicles of choice

  • Apply a small quantity to affected areas 2-3 times a day until healing is complete

    • healing may take up to 4-6 weeks in serious infections
