Niclosamide (Niclocide)

Description:

  • Anthelmintic

Indications:

  • Diphyllobothrium latum, Dipylidium caninum, Enterobius vermicularis

  • Fasciolopsis buski, hymenolepiasis

  • Hymenolepis nana, Taenia saginata

  • Taenia solium, taeniasis

Contraindications:

  • None

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: drowsiness, dizziness, headache

  • GI: nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, anorexia, diarrhea

  • SKIN: rash

 

 

Dosage:

Administered orally

  • Treatment of beef and fish tapeworms (Taenia saginata) infections:

    • Adult:   PO 2g as a singe dose. May repeat in 7 days if required

    • Child:  PO 40 mg/kg as a single dose. Maximum dose 2g daily

 

  • Treatment of dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana) infections:

    • Adult:   PO 2g once daily for 7 days. May be repeated in 7-14 days if required
    • Child:   PO 40 mg/kg daily for 7 days. Maximum dose is 2g daily
