Chlorpheniramine and Pseudoephedrine (Deconamine, various)

Category:

  • Miscellaneous

Description:

  • Antihistamine and sympathomimetic combination

Indications:

  • allergic rhinitis

  • common cold

  • nasal congestion

Contraindications:

  • Severe hypertension, concurrent MAOI use, ischemic heart disease

Precautions:

  • Hypertension, prostatic hypertrophy, hyperthyroidism

  • Diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease

  • Glaucoma

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • drowsiness

  • hyperexcitability

  • nervousness, insomnia, dizziness

 

 

 

Dosage:

Administered orally (tablet, capsule, sustained release tablet, sustained release capsule, syrup

  • Adult: 

    • (extended-release capsule or tablet): PO 1 tablet or capsule every 12 hours

    • (nonextended-release tablets): PO 1 tablet every 4-6 hours

  • Note: Base dose on pseudoephedrine:

    • Adult: PO 60mg q 4-6 hours; 

    • PO SUS REL 120mg every 12 hours or 240mg once daily
