Operational Medicine 2001
Finger Splint

Order the Operational Medicine CD, developed by the US Navy and US Special Operations Command

The finger splint supplied in the MOLLE Medic Bag is foam-covered aluminum. It can be folded into a variety of shapes to simplify packing.

In the event of a suspected finger fracture:

  • Make no attempt to try to straighten out the finger in a field setting. You may cause additional damage to the finger. It is usually better to splint the finger in whatever position it is found, and then transport the patient for more definitive care.
  • Bend the splint so that the finger is protected and the joint above the suspected fracture and the joint below the suspected fracture are immobilized.
  • Securely wrap the splint and finger. In this example, adhesive tape is used, but other materials, such as Coban Self-Adherent roller tape, Ace bandage, or other similar materials can be used successfully.

If the victim is in severe pain, administer morphine.
