Preface

Naval Education and Training Command

This Training Manual (TRAMAN) and Nonresident Training Course (NRTC) form a self-study package that will enable ambitious Hospital Corps Personnel to help themselves in fulfilling the requirements of their rating. Among the requirements discussed are the abilities to perform duties as assistants in the prevention, recognition, and treatment of disease and injuries, and in the administration of medical departments ashore, afloat, and in the field with the Marine Corps; perform first aid; assist in the transportation of the sicK and injured; assist with physical examinations; give nursing care to patients, including the administration of medicines and parenteral solutions; collect laboratory specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures; assist in the procurement, storage, and issue of, and keeping of accounting records for, medical supplies; instruct in personal hygiene, first aid, and self-aid; assist in the preparation and maintenance of medical records; assist in the maintenance of aproved sanitary standards; and assist in the prevention and treatment of chemical, biological, and radiological casualties.

Designed for individual study and not formal classroom instruction, this TRAMAN provides subject matter directly related to the occupational qualifications of the HM 3 & 2 rating. However, certain occupational standards are not addressed in the TRAMAN. Specific notations have been made in the section entitled Occupational STandards. The NRTC provides the usual way of satisfying the requirements for completion of this TRAMAN.

This manual and NRTC were prepared by the Naval Health Sciences Education and Training Command, Naval Education and Training Command, National Capital Region, Bethesda MD 20814, under the supervision of the Naval Education and Training Command, Washington DC 20372.
