FERTILIZATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The union of ovum and sperm is called fertilization.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, fertilization takes\u00a0place in the outer one-third of the fallopian tube shortly after ovulation (the discharge of\u00a0ovum from the mature follicle) and insemination (introduction of the male&#8217;s seminal fluid\u00a0into the female&#8217;s vagina).<\/p>\n<p>a. <strong>Zygote<\/strong>. To penetrate the ovum, the sperm releases the enzyme\u00a0hyaluronidase that makes the surface of the ovum more permeable.<\/p>\n<p>The sperm enters\u00a0the ovum. The nuclei of the sperm and the ovum fuse, making the process of\u00a0fertilization complete. A new cell, called the zygote, has been made. The zygote cell\u00a0has 46 chromosomes and all the potentials of the new individual: sex, size, hair color,\u00a0eye color, etc.<\/p>\n<p>b. <strong>Cell Divisions<\/strong>. The zygote begins mitotic cell divisions within the space of\u00a0hours after the zygote has formed.
