MAMMARY GLANDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>a. <strong>Description\/Information.<\/strong> The mammary glands (breasts) are modified\u00a0sweat glands which are located over the pectoralis major muscle between the second\u00a0and the sixth ribs.<\/p>\n<p>The interior of each mammary gland contains 15 to 20 compartments\u00a0called lobes. These lobes are connected by fatty tissue called adipose tissue. The size\u00a0of a female&#8217;s breasts is determined by the amount of adipose tissue in the breasts. The\u00a0amount of milk a female produces after childbirth has nothing to do with the size of her\u00a0breasts. Each lobe contains several smaller compartments called lobules. Lobules are\u00a0made up of connective tissue containing milk-secreting cells named alveoli.<\/p>\n<p>b.<strong> Functions in Pregnancy<\/strong>. A female&#8217;s breasts enlarge after the second\u00a0months of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the nipples become darker due to an increase\u00a0in pigmentation. For the first three days after the infant&#8217;s birth, the breasts produce a\u00a0thin, yellowish fluid called colostrum. This fluid is not as nutritious as breast milk but it\u00a0serves to nourish the infant until the mother&#8217;s breast milk comes in on the third or fourth\u00a0day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a.
