The mechanism by which life is maintained is\u00a0reproduction.<\/p>\n<p>Reproduction can be defined as the process by which a single cell\u00a0duplicates its genetic material, thus allowing an organism to grow and repair itself.\u00a0Reproduction, therefore, maintains the life of a member of a species. Additionally,\u00a0reproduction is the process by which genetic material is passed from generation to\u00a0generation.<\/p>\n<p>b. <strong>Major Types of Reproduction.<\/strong> There are two major types of reproduction:\u00a0asexual and sexual.<\/p>\n<p>Only one parent is involved in asexual reproduction. The parent\u00a0cell may divide and become two new cells, or the new organism may arise from a part\u00a0of the parent cell. In the case of humans, sexual reproduction takes place. This\u00a0requires the participation of two parents. Each parent produces special reproductive\u00a0cells called sex cells or gametes. In this sense, reproduction maintains the continuation\u00a0of the species. If a species loses its reproductive capability, the species no longer\u00a0survives. It becomes extinct.<\/p>\n<p>c.<strong> Female Reproductive System Functions<\/strong>. The female reproductive system\u00a0has specialized organs to carry out its three important functions.<\/p>\n<p>These functions are\u00a0the production of egg cells, the disintegration of nonfertilized egg cells, and the\u00a0protection of the developing embryo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a.
