DEFINITIONS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A problem in reporting and studying child abuse is that there are many definitions\u00a0of terms rather than standardization of terms.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and\u00a0Treatment Act defines child abuse and neglect as &#8220;the physical or mental injury, sexual\u00a0abuse or exploitation, negligent treatment, or maltreatment of a child under the age of\u00a0eighteen, by a person who is responsible for the child&#8217;s welfare, under circumstances\u00a0which indicate that the child&#8217;s health or welfare is harmed or threatened thereby.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0general working definition for child abuse might be this. Child abuse is a non accidental\u00a0injury or pattern of injuries to a child, injuries for which there is no reasonable\u00a0explanation. The word &#8220;injuries&#8221; includes nonaccidental physical injury, neglect,\u00a0emotional abuse, and sexual molestation. These definitions will be helpful in\u00a0understanding the problem of child abuse.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>NOTE: Parents are the most frequent child abusers. Other caretakers (parent&#8217;s\u00a0friends, relatives, day care workers) may also be child abusers.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>a. <strong>Physical Abuse<\/strong>. Physical abuse includes severe beating, burning, shaking,\u00a0human biting, and strangulation.<\/p>\n<p>b. <strong>Neglect<\/strong>. Neglect refers to failure to provide a child with the basic necessities\u00a0of life such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care.<\/p>\n<p>c. <strong>Emotional Abuse<\/strong>. Emotional abuse includes excessive, aggressive, or other\u00a0parental behavior that places unreasonable demands on a child to perform more than\u00a0he is capable of doing. Examples of such abuse include belittling or verbal attacks; lack\u00a0of love, support, or guidance; constant, excessive teaching.<\/p>\n<p>d. <strong>Sexual Abuse<\/strong>. Exploitation of a child for the sexual gratification of an adult\u00a0defines sexual abuse. Examples of sexual abuse include rape, incest, fondling of a\u00a0child&#8217;s genitals by an adult, and exhibitionism (a compulsion to show the genitals).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A problem in reporting and studying child abuse is that there are many definitions\u00a0of terms rather than standardization of terms.
