This is a severe respiratory illness in infants and young children under\u00a0two years of age.<\/p>\n
a. History<\/strong>. Be sure to take a good history. Ask the following questions:<\/p>\n (1) Is there a family history of asthma or allergies?<\/p>\n (2) Does the child have known allergies? If the answer is yes, he could\u00a0have asthma.<\/p>\n (3) Has the child had a low-grade fever recently? If the answer is yes, he\u00a0may have bronchiolitis.<\/p>\n b. Signs\/Symptoms<\/strong>. Included are the following:<\/p>\n (1) Look for signs of infection such as low-grade fever.<\/p>\n (2) Look for signs of respiratory distress such as wheezing, coughing, and\u00a0sputum production.<\/p>\n (3) The child’s age is important. If he is under one year and has the signs\u00a0and symptoms of bronchiolitis, he is likely to have bronchiolitis.<\/p>\n c. Treatment<\/strong>.
