Postpartum hemorrhage is excessive bleeding (hemorrhage) that occurs after\u00a0delivery. (Normal bleeding after delivery is one to two cups of blood.)<\/p>\n
a. Internal Bleeding<\/strong>. Causes of internal bleeding after delivery include retained\u00a0placental products, inadequate uterine contractions, or clotting disorders. Treat as\u00a0follows:<\/p>\n (1) If the bleeding is profuse, continue uterine massage and put the baby to\u00a0the mother’s breast.<\/p>\n (2) Continue support of the patient’s circulation with colloid or saline by IV.<\/p>\n (3) Transport the patient and baby rapidly to a medical treatment facility.<\/p>\n (4) DO NOT examine the mother’s vagina or pack the mother’s vagina with\u00a0anything.<\/p>\n b. External Bleeding<\/strong>. External bleeding may be caused by perineal tears.\u00a0Manage such bleeding with pressure.
