PROLAPSED UMBILICAL CORD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prolapse of the umbilical cord is a rare occurrence, but it does happen. A\u00a0prolapsed umbilical cord is one which delivers before the presenting part of the baby.<\/p>\n<p>This places the baby in danger of suffocating. The baby&#8217;s head is pressing against the\u00a0cord in the birth canal, cutting off the baby&#8217;s oxygen supply.<\/p>\n<p>Perform this emergency\u00a0care:<\/p>\n<p>a. Put the mother either in a knee-chest position or supine position with her hips\u00a0elevated on a pillow.<\/p>\n<p>b. Administer oxygen to the mother and keep her warm.<\/p>\n<p>c. With your sterile gloved hand, push the baby&#8217;s head up into the vagina three\u00a0to four inches.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>CAUTION: Local protocol may not allow this action.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>d. DO NOT attempt to push the cord pack or put pressure on the cord.<\/p>\n<p>e.
