(The same rules would apply to moving a patient.)<\/p>\n<p>The object will be moved from a waist high area to a lower area five to ten feet away. The procedure will combine all the rules of body mechanics previously discussed.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Identify the object to be moved.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Adopt a stable base of support.<\/li>\n<li>Your feet are separated.<\/li>\n<li>One foot is behind the other.<\/li>\n<li>Your back is straight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Grasp the object at its approximate center of gravity.<\/p>\n<p>Pull the object toward your body&#8217;s center of gravity using your arm and leg muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Re-establish your base of support and appropriate body alignment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your back is straight.<\/li>\n<li>You have a stable base of support.<\/li>\n<li>You are holding the object approximately at waist height and close to your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pivot toward the desired direction of travel.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn on both feet at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a stable balance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Re-establish a stable base of support and appropriate body alignment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your back is straight.<\/li>\n<li>Your feet are apart, one slightly behind the other.<\/li>\n<li>The object is at hip level, close to your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Squat and place the object onto the lower area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bend at the knees and hips.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a straight back.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a stable base of support.<\/li>\n<li>Use your arm and leg muscles (as needed) for guidance.<\/li>\n<li>Use your leg muscles to resume an upright position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following paragraph takes you through the process of moving (lifting, pivoting, squatting, and carrying) a heavy object.
