Trauma to the kidneys includes contusions, lacerations, and rupture.<\/p>\n<p>Because the kidneys are very vascular organs, receiving about one half the blood flow from the abdominal aorta, even a small laceration can cause massive hemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p>b. Any blunt or penetrating injury to the back, flank, or abdomen may bruise, lacerate, or rupture a kidney.<\/p>\n<p>c. Signs and symptoms of kidney trauma include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(1) Nausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(2) Back pain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(3) Flank pain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(4) Abdominal tenderness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(5) Hematuria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(6) Palpable mass (indicating internal bleeding).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(7) Shock.<\/p>\n<p>d. Nursing implications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(1) Treat shock and hemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(2) Avoid administration of narcotic analgesics, as they mask symptoms that will indicate the onset of complications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(3) Observe vital signs closely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(4) Evaluate frequently for changes in status.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(5) Monitor hemoglobin and hematocrit for signs of internal bleeding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(6) Maintain and monitor urinary drainage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(7) Enforce strict bedrest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(8) In cases of a severe or penetrating injury, surgical intervention is Prepare the patient for surgical repair or nephrectomy, as indicated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>a.
