The new airfield was named Hammer Field and was used by the\u00a0<a title=\"United States Army Air Forces\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army_Air_Forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Army Air Forces<\/a>\u00a0as a training facility for the new pilots of the\u00a0<a title=\"Fourth Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fourth_Air_Force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fourth Air Force<\/a>. It had a single northwest\/southeast oriented runway with a length of 7,200 feet (now runway 11L\/29R).<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresno_Yosemite_International_Airport#cite_note-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>At the time, civil and commercial aviation used\u00a0<a title=\"Fresno Chandler Executive Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresno_Chandler_Executive_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chandler Field<\/a>\u00a0that had opened in November 1929.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Chandler_History_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresno_Yosemite_International_Airport#cite_note-Chandler_History-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Chandler is 1.5 miles (2.4\u00a0km) west of downtown Fresno, on a small site. Less than a decade after it opened, it was clear that the small runway at Chandler would not be able to accommodate coming larger airliners.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Chandler_History_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fresno_Yosemite_International_Airport#cite_note-Chandler_History-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>After World War II, Hammer Field was inactivated by the Army Air Forces and the city of Fresno saw an opportunity to use the site to create a commercial airport much larger than Chandler Field. In 1946 the\u00a0<a title=\"War Assets Administration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_Assets_Administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">War Assets Administration<\/a>\u00a0reallocated the property to the city, which immediately began construction on a passenger terminal on the northeast side of the airfield. In 1948, the newly renamed Fresno Air Terminal (FAT) opened.\u00a0<a title=\"Trans World Airlines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trans_World_Airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trans World Airlines<\/a>\u00a0(TWA) and\u00a0<a title=\"United Airlines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Airlines<\/a>\u00a0flights to San Francisco\/Oakland and Los Angeles moved from Chandler Field to the newly opened airport.
