The\u00a0El Capitan<\/b>\u00a0was a\u00a0streamlined<\/a>\u00a0passenger train<\/a>\u00a0operated by the\u00a0Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway<\/a>\u00a0(“Santa Fe”) between\u00a0Chicago<\/a>,\u00a0Illinois<\/a>, and\u00a0Los Angeles<\/a>,\u00a0California<\/a>. It operated from 1938 to 1971;\u00a0Amtrak<\/a>\u00a0retained the name until 1973. The\u00a0El Capitan\u00a0was the only all-coach or “chair car” (non-Pullman<\/a>\u00a0sleeper) to operate on the Santa Fe main line between Chicago and Los Angeles on the same fast schedule as the railroad’s premier all-Pullman\u00a0Super Chief<\/a>. It was also the first train to receive the pioneering\u00a0Hi-Level<\/a>\u00a0equipment with which it would become synonymous<\/em>.<\/p>\n
