It operated from 1938 to 1971;\u00a0<a title=\"Amtrak\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amtrak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amtrak<\/a>\u00a0retained the name until 1973. The\u00a0El Capitan\u00a0was the only all-coach or &#8220;chair car&#8221; (non-<a title=\"Pullman (car or coach)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pullman_(car_or_coach)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pullman<\/a>\u00a0sleeper) to operate on the Santa Fe main line between Chicago and Los Angeles on the same fast schedule as the railroad&#8217;s premier all-Pullman\u00a0<a title=\"Super Chief\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Chief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Chief<\/a>.
