The Mustang was designed in 1940 by\u00a0<a title=\"North American Aviation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Aviation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North American Aviation<\/a>(NAA) in response to a requirement of the\u00a0<a title=\"British Purchasing Commission\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Purchasing_Commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Purchasing Commission<\/a>. The Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build\u00a0<a title=\"Curtiss P-40 Warhawk\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtiss_P-40_Warhawk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curtiss P-40 fighters<\/a>\u00a0under license for the\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Air Force\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Air_Force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. It was first flown operationally by the RAF as a\u00a0<a title=\"Reconnaissance aircraft\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reconnaissance_aircraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tactical-reconnaissance aircraft<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Fighter-bomber\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fighter-bomber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fighter-bomber<\/a>\u00a0(Mustang Mk I).
