All the same,\u00a0<a title=\"Inertia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inertia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inertial<\/a> errors are inevitable when the vessel is turning sharply or being tossed about by rough seas. To ensure directional readings that are adequately stable, marine fluxgate compasses always incorporate either fluid or electronic\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Damping\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damping<\/a>. An alternative is to use a 3-axis fluxgate\u00a0<a title=\"Magnetometer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnetometer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnetometer<\/a>\u00a0to provide a 3D flux vector, and the magnetic heading is derived from the flux on a plane\u00a0<a title=\"Perpendicular\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perpendicular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perpendicular<\/a>\u00a0to gravity, thus providing immunity from pitching and rolling.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Fluxgate compasses and\u00a0<a title=\"Gyrocompass\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gyrocompass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gyrocompasses<\/a>\u00a0complement one another nicely. The fluxgate provides a directional reference that is stable over the long term, apart from changing magnetic disturbances, and the gyrocompass is accurate over the short-term, even against\u00a0<a title=\"Acceleration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acceleration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acceleration<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Heeling (sailing)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heeling_(sailing)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heeling<\/a>\u00a0effects. At high\u00a0<a title=\"Latitude\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latitude\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latitudes<\/a>, where the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field dips downward toward the\u00a0<a title=\"Poles of astronomical bodies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poles_of_astronomical_bodies#Magnetic_poles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnetic poles<\/a>, the gyro data can be used to correct for roll-induced heading errors in the fluxgate output.
