Anderson, USAAF, 1919-1945<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lt. Hal A. Anderson was Tom Cartmell&#8217;s Radio Operator (R.O.). They trained together in Fresno, California, and then deployed to France together with the 417th Night Fighter Squadron.<\/p>\n<p>Andy was from Portland, Oregon, and had been married 3 months to his wife, Mary, when they were all in training in Fresno. When Andy and Tom left Fresno, Mary moved in with Zoe and Jean Clyde (Bob&#8217;s wife), so the three could share the apartment together.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of his deployment, Andy and Mary were expecting a baby.<\/p>\n<p>After Tom&#8217;s plane was shot down, his Commanding Officer, Major McCray wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Yesterday we received word from an infantry unit that Tom\u2019s plane had crash-landed in this area after being hit by flak. Tom was killed in the crash. Hal Anderson had apparently attempted to use his chute but had been too low. Both Tom and Hal were buried with full military honors in a U.S. cemetery in Southern Germany.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His remains and Tom&#8217;s remains were transferred to St. Avold-Metz Military Cemetery in France. In 1948, Andy&#8217;s body was returned to the the U.S. and interred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brooksidepress.org\/cartmell\/wp-content\/uploads\/283892_130725466136.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4244 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/brooksidepress.org\/cartmell\/wp-content\/uploads\/283892_130725466136-189x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brooksidepress.org\/cartmell\/wp-content\/uploads\/283892_130725466136-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/brooksidepress.org\/cartmell\/wp-content\/uploads\/283892_130725466136.jpg 338w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lt.
