5-10. MONITOR A CASUALTY WITH AN OPEN HEAD WOUND

Position the casualty (paragraph 5-5).

Continue to check the casualty’s level of consciousness every 15 minutes. If the casualty falls asleep, wake the casualty to check his level of consciousness.

Be aware of any changes in the casualty’s condition. Reposition the casualty, if needed. Maintain the casualty’s airway, if needed. Do not give the casualty anything to eat or drink since eating or drinking could cause the casualty to vomit. Treat the casualty for shock, if needed. If the wound is serious (other than a minor scalp laceration), provide oxygen (if available) and evacuate the casualty.
