Emergency War Surgery NATO Handbook: Part II: Response of the Body to Wounding:
Chapter IX: Shock and Resuscitation
Organization of a Triage and Resuscitation Facility
United States Department of Defense
Prompt, preoperative resuscitation saves lives. Careful preliminary preparations must
be made and resuscitative measures instituted with the least possible delay once a
casualty has been received in the resuscitation facility. The triage and resuscitation of
casualties in shock require considerable clinical experience and acumen. Ali experienced
medical officer, assisted by an experienced and well-trained staff, should be in charge of
the triage and resuscitation facility. There must be coordination between the triage
officer, the resuscitation personnel, and the operating room personnel. The triage surgeon
not only sets individual resuscitation and operative priorities but also must be
intimately involved ill coordinating and facilitating casualty flow.
