Operational Medicine 2001
Skin Cleanser

Order the Operational Medicine CD, developed by the US Navy and US Special Operations Command

Good handwashing techniques can prevent the spread of infectious organisms:

  • From one patient to another,
  • From the patient to the health care provider, and
  • From the health care provider to the patient.

The traditional method of handwashing involves the use of soap and warm water, before and after caring for patients. But in many military settings, this technique is not available.

Alcohol Gel can substitute for soap and warm water:

  1. Place a "palmful" of the Alcohol Gel in one hand.
  2. Use both hands to spread the gel over all surfaces.
  3. Allow the gel to dry. This takes 1-2 minutes.
  4. Place a smaller amount of the Alcohol Gel in one hand.
  5. Repeat the spreading and drying, using both hands. This will take about 30 seconds.

Alcohol Gel is suitable for repeated use.
