This burn dressing is a semi-liquid (water)
gel contained in a 4" x 16" bandage.
It cools the skin on contact and has been shown to reduce the need for
debridement by as much as 90%.
It safely treats white phosphorous burns. These burns are challenging
because any embedded particles of white phosphorous continue to burn if
exposed to oxygen. The semi-liquid gel keeps oxygen from the white
phosphorous particles, extinguishing them. This beneficial effect lasts
even after the dressing is removed, so long as the gel remains on the
wound.
- Tear open the waterproof package.
- Place the gel pad over the burn.
- Unfold the gel pad as needed to cover a larger area.
- Keep the gel pad in place using gentle bandaging without pressure.
(Shown here is Kerlix rolled gauze)
These burn dressings are effective and very useful. Unfortunately, they
are heavy (nearly a quarter pound each), limiting the number that can
reasonably be carried.
