Amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, Polymox)

Category:

  • Antibiotic

Description:

  • Penicillins

Indications:

  • Mild to moderate infections, 

  • Respiratory Tract Infections, 

  • Systemic Bacterial Endocarditis prophylaxis

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with PCN or cephalosporin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Counsel patient to finish all medication to prevent development of resistance

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis

Dosage:

  • Administered orally (chewable tablets, capsules, powder for oral suspension)

  • Adult:

    • 250-500mg q8h

  • gonorrhea:  3gm single dose

  • SBE:  3gm 1 hr prior to procedure then 1.5gm 6 hrs after initial dose

  • Child:

    • 20-40mg/kg/day in divided doses q8h

    • For oral suspension:  refrigerate, shake well, good for 10 days only
