Description:

• Synthetic opiate agonist analgesic

Indications:

• Severe pain

• Heroin and Opiate detoxification

Contraindications:

• Patients with impaired respiratory function.

Precautions:

• Pregnancy Category C

• May induce pulmonary edema

• Rapid administration may induce respiratory depression, therefore monitor patient’s respiratory function.

• Patients will experience CNS effects of drowsiness and dizziness, therefore use caution with motor vehicle operation or other hazardous tasks.

• Use with caution with other CNS depressive medications.

• Like any narcotic, may be addictive when used for prolonged periods of time (weeks to months).

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

• Sedation

• Dizziness

• Constipation

• Excessive sweating  

Dosage:

Administered orally, SQ, or IM

Pain relief:

• Normal oral, SQ or IM: 2.5-10mg q3-4h as needed

Detoxification:

• Packaged as a dispersible tablet.

• Diluted in oral liquid to decrease potential for IV abuse
