Reduced Vision

Transient

  • Definition: return of vision in 24 hours usually within one hour 
  • Differential diagnosis:
    • Most common migraine
    • Contact lens displacement
    • Less common Cloaucoma, central retinal vein occlusion, ischemic optic neuropathy, CNS lesion, optis disc drusen

Complete

  •  Definition: greater than 24 hours
  •  Differential diagnosis
    • Sudden: (painless) Most common:  Vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, optic neuritis, central retinal vein and artery occlusion
    • Gradual: (painless) Most common:  cataract, refractive error, glaucoma, diabetes. Less common: corneal disease, solar retinopathy
    • Painful loss of vision: Acute angle closure glaucoma, uveitis, and retro bulbar optic neuritis
