Apply Eye Ointment

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Squeeze out about an inch of ointment and discard it.
  3. Using your index finger to retract the lower lid, squeeze out a ribbon of ointment and let it fall onto the inner aspect of the lower lid.
  4. Don't touch the tip of the tube to the eye or the inner lid.
  5. Have the patient close his or her eyes and roll the eyes around to distribute the ointment.
  6. Then use a tissue to gently wipe away the excess ointment.

Squeeze out and discard an inch of ointment.

Lay the ribbon of ointment into the inner lid, but without touching the eye or the lid with the tip of the tube.

Have the patient roll his or her eyes around until the ointment is distributed.
