TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Without the aid of references, the student will compare rank/rate structure of USMC and USN personnel, per the references.  (FMST.01.01)

 ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Without the aid of reference materials and given a written description and a list of the rank structure of Marine Corps personnel and a list of the rank/rate structure of Navy personnel, match the equivalents, per the student handout.  (FMST.01.01a)

OUTLINE

 A.     ENLISTED MARINES.

  1. Marine Corps Enlisted personnel wear their rank insignia on both sleeves.

  1. Color of Chevrons.

a.       Winter Uniform (“Alpha” green jacket) – forest green chevron on red background.  Chevrons on khaki shirts are also forest green, but have no background.

b.      Dress Blue Uniform – yellow on red background.

  1. Enlisted grades within the Marine Corps are categorized into three groups.

a.       Junior Enlisted:  E-1 to E-3

b.      Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO):  E-4 and E-5

c.       Staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO):  E-6 to E-9

d.      A major difference between Navy and Marine Corps is the step from NCO to SNCO.  It is E-7 for Navy and E-6 for Marine Corps.

  1. E-8’s and E-9’s

a.       First Sergeant (E-8) and Sergeant Major (E-9) are administrative pay grades.

b.      Master Sergeant (E-8) and Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) are technical pay grades.

  1. Senior enlisted man in the Marine Corps is the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.  He is equivalent in pay grade to the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.

B.     COMMISSIONED OFFICERS.  Marine Corps Officers wear gold or silver rank insignias on the shoulder straps of their coats.  They also wear small replicas of their insignias on their shirt collar.  Navy officer rank can be determine by gold stripes on shoulder boards or stripes on the sleeves of their dress blue coats.  In addition, Navy officers wear collar rank insignias on khaki uniform shirts like those of the corresponding Marine Corps grades.

  1. Officer grades are categorized into three groups.

a.       Company Grade:  O-1 to O-3

b.      Field Grade:  O-4 to O-6

c.       General Grade:  O-7 to O-10
