Operational Medicine 2001
Chemical Cold Pack

Order the Operational Medicine CD, developed by the US Navy and US Special Operations Command

Chemical cold packs are stored at normal temperatures.

When needed:

  • Break the inner bag (containing water, urea, and green dye) by folding and compressing it.
  • Mix the liquid with the solid.
  • Apply the cold pack to the affected area.

Because the cold pack can generate temperatures well below freezing, try not to apply it to bare skin where it can cause frost-bite. Instead, put cloth or gauze between the skin and the cold pack.

Wrapping the injury and the cold pack with a roller bandage will help hold the cold pack in place. Using an Ace bandage applies a slight degree of compression which may help reduce swelling following injury.

While the cold back is useful for soft tissue injuries, its' weight limits the number of these that can be carried.
