Operational Medicine 2001
Ammonia Inhalent Pads

Order the Operational Medicine CD, developed by the US Navy and US Special Operations Command

Ammonia, a poison in large quantities, is a powerful awakening agent.

When opened and held under the nose, a strong withdrawal reaction is provoked.

For individuals who have fainted or are on the verge of unconsciousness, using ammonia inhalents may be effective in arousing them.

These will be ineffective if the reason the victim is unconscious is related to hemorrhage, shock, stroke, or other significant injury. For those who have fainted for less serious reasons (postural hypotension, psychogenic shock, vagal reaction), use of the inhalent is frequently unnecessary as these are usually self-limiting problems.
