Kaolin-Pectin (Kaopectate)

Category:

  • Gastrointestinal

Description:

  • May act as absorbent antidiarrheal

Indications:

  • Diarrhea

Drug interactions:

  • Reduced efficacy: clindamycin, lincomycin

  • Reduced bioavailability of tablets (capsules not affected): digioxin

  • Reduced plasma concentrations: quinidine

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; not absorbed, should have no effect on lactation or nursing infant

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • GI: constipation

 

 

 

Dosage:

Administered orally as a suspension

  • Adult: 

    • PO 60-120ml after each loose bowel movement

  • Child:  

    • (age 6-12) 

      • PO 30-60ml after each loose bowel movement

    • (age 3-6) 

      • PO 15-30ml after each loose bowel movement
