Selenium Sulfide (Selsun, Exsel)

Category:

  • Antifungal

Description:

  • Antifungal, antiseborrheic

Indications:

  • Dandruff

  • Seborrheic dermatitis

  • Tinea versicolor

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to sulfur preparations

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • Infants

  • Inflamed skin

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • SKIN: alopecia, discoloration of hair (minimized with thorough rinsing, oiliness of hair and scalp, skin irritation

 

 

Dosage:

Administered topically (EXTERNAL USE ONLY)

  • Adult and child:  

    • Seborrheic dermatits/dandruff: TOP wash hair with 1-2 teaspoonsful, leave on 2-3 minutes, rinse, repeat; 2 applications per week for control or as needed for maintenance

    • Tinea versicolor:  TOP apply to affected area (perhaps with small amount of water), allow to remain on skin for 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly, repeat daily for 7 days; repeat as needed for maintenance
