Ticarcillin/Clavulanate potassium (Timentin)

Category:

  • Antibiotic

Description:

  • Penicillin with beta-lactamase inhibitor

  • 100mg potassium clavunate per 3 grams of ticarcillin

Indications:

  • Mild to moderate infections (i.e.; septicemia, lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin , bone, joint, intra-abdominal, and gynecological infections)

  • susceptible strains of H. influenzae, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. coli, Klebsiella species, S. epidermidis,Citrobacter species, Serratia marcescens, B. melaninogenicus  Enterobacter species

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with PCN or cephalosporin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Dosage modifications are generally only required in patients with severe renal impairment

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis  

Dosage:

Administered by IV injection over 30 minutes

  • Adult (> 60kg):

    • 3.1 grams every 4-6 hours

  • moderate gynecological infections: 

    • 200mg/kg/day every 6 hours

  • severe gynecological infections: 

    • 300mg/kg/day every 4 hours

    • Adult (< 60kg): 200-300mg/kg/day every 4-6 hours

    • Child (> 60kg):mild to moderate infections: 3.1 grams every 6 hours

  • severe infections: 3.1 grams every 4 hours

    • Child (< 60kg):

    • dosed at 50mg/kg/dose

  • mild to moderate infections: 200mg/kg/day every 6 hours

  • severe infections: 300mg/kg/day every 4 hours
