Silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene)

Description:

  • Antibiotic

Indications:

  • Adjunct for the prevention and treatment of wound sepsis in patients with 2nd and 3rd degree burns

Contraindications:

  • Child < 2 months

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Impaired hepatic or renal function

  • G-6-PD deficiency

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • GU: crystalluria

  • HEME: reversible leukopenia

  • SKIN: burning, brownish-gray skin discoloration, erythema, itching, pain, rash, skin necrosis, stinging, urticaria

Dosage:

Administered topically

  • Adult and Child: 

    • TOP apply to affected area 1-2 times daily; burned area should be covered with cream at all times
