Potassium Acetate Injection

Category:

  • Electrolyte and water

Description:

  • Electrolyte

Indications:

  • Used in large volume IV fluids as a potassium source for hypokalemia in patients with restricted or no oral intake

  • IV additive when other the patient needs cannot be met by other formulations

Contraindications:

  • Severe renal insufficiency or adrenal insufficiency

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • High potassium concentrations may cause death by cardiac depression, arrhythmias or arrest

  • Digitalized patients

  • Excess dosing (acetate) may lead to metabolic alkalosis

  • Infusion monitored by electrocardiograph

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • With toxicity: 

    • paresthesias of the extremities

    • flaccid paralysis

    • listlessness

    • mental confusion

    • weakness and heaviness of the legs

    • hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias

    • heart block

    • prolonged QRS intervals

    • cardiac arrest

Dosage:

Administered intravenously only after dilution in a larger volume of fluid.

  • Dose and rate of administration are dependent upon the individual needs of the patient.  

  • Electrocardiograph and serum potassium should be monitored as a guide to dosage.

  • Do not administer unless solution is clear.  Discard unused portion.
