Nizatidine (Axid)

Category:

  • Gastrointestinal

Description:

  • Antiulcer agent

Indications:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer (active and for suppression)

  • Heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach due to over indulgence

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B; excreted in breast milk (0.1% of dose)

  • Renal insufficiency

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: dizziness, drowsiness, headache

  • CV: bradycardia, palpitation, tachycardia

  • EENT: rhinitis

  • GI: constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, hepatitis, nausea

  • HEME: anemia, thrombocytopenia

  • METAB: gynecomastia, hyperuricemia

  • MS: myalgia

  • SKIN: acne, pruritus, sweating, urticaria

Dosage:

Administered orally

  • Adult:            

    • Heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach due to overindulgence: PO 75mg 2 times daily (OTC)

    • Active duodenal or benign gastric ulcer: PO 300mg at bedtime or 150mg 2 times daily for 4-8 weeks

    • Maintenance of healed duodenal ulcer: PO 150mg at bedtime

    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease: PO 15omg 2 times daily

Dosage adjustment of renal insufficiency (active ulcer disease), CrCl 20-50 mg/mil, 150mg once daily; CrCl <20 ml/min 150mg every other day
