Mupirocin Ointment (Bactroban)

Category:

  • Antibiotic

Description:

  • Topical anti-infective

Indications:

  • Topical ointment

    • impetigo caused by  S. aureus, S. pyogenes, beta-hemolytic streptococcus

  • Topical cream

    • treatment of secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions due to S. aureus, S. pyogenes

  • Nasal

    • eradication of methicillin-resistant S. aureus

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • For external use only, avoid contact with eyes

  • Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed through open wounds

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Topical ointment

    • burning

    • stinging

    • itching

    • rash

    • nausea

    • dry skin

    • erythema

  • Topical cream

    • headache

    • rash

    • nausea

    • abdominal pain

  • Nasal

    • Headache (9%)

    • rhinitis (6%)

    • upper respiratory congestion

    • pharyngitis

    • taste changes

Dosage:

  • Administered topically, may be covered with gauze dressing

  • Topical ointment

    • Apply a small amount to surface 3 times per day, re-evaluate in 3-5 days

  • Topical cream

    • Apply a small amount to surface 3 times per day for 10 days

  • Nasal

    • Apply small amount to nostril interior twice a day (morning and evening) for 5 days

    • After application, pinch nostrils together and release repeatedly for ~1 minute
