Bismuth Subsalicylate Tablets (Pepto-Bismol)

Category:

  • Gastrointestinal

Description:

  • Antacid, antiemetic

Indications:

  • Diarrhea

  • Heartburn

  • Indigestion

  • Upset stomach and nausea

Contraindications:

  • Aspirin or salicylate allergy

  • Children/teenagers recovering from flu or chicken pox (possible early sign of Reye Syndrome)

Precautions:

  • Concurrent anticoagulant therapy

  • Pregnancy (use cautiously)

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • GI: dark stool, darkening of the tongue

Dosage:

Administered orally: 

  • Chew or dissolve in mouth. 

  • Repeat every ½ to 1 hour as needed to maximum of 8 doses daily.  

  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration, which may accompany diarrhea.

Adult:   PO 2 tablets

Child: 9-12 years: PO 1 tablet

Child: 6-9 years: PO 2/3 tablet

Child: 3-6 years: PO 1/3 tablet
